15 Jul Unveiling Our Acts: Damien, Yvonne and Helen and Jes+The Loft Kids
With our first public showcase coming up soon, we bring to you a glimpse of the people behind the music and what they hope to bring to the table for their performances.
In our second edition in the series of Loft, Unplugged: Unveiling Our Acts, meet Damien, Helen and Yvonne who will be performing a full set of Mando-pop hits and Jes and The Loft Kids, who will be taking the stage together for the first time.
“At first, when we first got put together, we didn’t really know what to expect, because we didn’t really know each other prior to this.”, Helen explains, when asked about the trios initial thoughts when they were approached to perform for Loft, Unplugged.
“But working together so far has been a very fresh and enjoyable experience for the three of us! I think it’s because we have good dynamics and complementary strengths. Practices are light hearted, we find that our vocal ranges blend and we all are very open to trying new things, experimenting with our sound.”, adds Yvonne.
Avid Mando-pop fans, the trio share that their music libraries are filled with mostly Chinese songs. Damien shares that the lyrics of Mandarin songs are the main reason for this preference, “For me personally, I really enjoy listening to Chinese songs because every word means something, and the lyrics can be very poetic. I think it’s because of that that I can feel the emotions of the song more and it has a greater impact and impression on me.”
As for how they would describe their upcoming set at Loft, Unplugged, the trio reveal that they will be performing reinterpreted versions of classic Mando-pop hits, changing up their arrangements and with the addition of a special element-beatbox, with Yvonne, a renowned beatboxer on board with them.
“It’s our first time performing for a Loft event so it definitely is a privilege,” explains Damien. “We are able to share what we have learnt with the people we love and care about, and also through this, develop further in our skills as performers and vocalists as a result of working with others that have complementary skills, so this definitely is a very meaningful experience for us as well.”
For vocal instructor and kids specialist teacher, Jessica Tea, few things are as rewarding as seeing the joy that singing brings to her young students.
“Our young students here at the Loft have such different and unique personalities-and I really enjoy getting to work with each of them, and to see how their personalities shine through when they sing-some of them dance while they sing, some of them enjoy rapping during the song…singing is such a great avenue for them to express and discover themselves as well.”
Come 15th August, it will be the first time that Jessica performs an acoustic set with her young students, Erica,9, and Cheryl,10, budding vocalists that have been practicing hard for their set. “They’ve memorized the songs and even know the rap to one of the songs we are performing already! I really think that getting them involved in the showcase and letting them perform is really good-not only do they get to practice what they’ve learnt in class, they also get a taste of performing and singing in front of their friends and family. It’ll really help teach them confidence from a young age,” Jessica explains, when asked for her thoughts on her young students performing for the showcase.
With a mix of upbeat and rhythmic pop numbers, get ready to clap and sing along with them.
