FEATURED STUDENTS

Kelvin Loh | 88.3FM DJ

I am currently a Radio DJ at Singapore’s only bilingual Radio Station – 88.3Jia FM! I love my job and have a passion for the work I do in the entertainment industry as it is a place I can meet and learn from different people and at the same time, it is a place where I use my skills and talents.

Most people don’t know this but I’ve always love singing since I was a child but I never dared to pursue my interest in singing openly because a schoolmate commented that my singing was bad. I still remember how I still sang when I was alone and even joined singing competitions without telling anyone!

I decided to take up singing lessons sometime back because I felt it was about time that I tried taking my interest in singing further. I found that I have been benefiting a lot from lessons and that all the skills and techniques that I have learnt not only help me in my singing, but also in my work as a DJ and host. In the past, I would lose my voice very often after extended periods of talking and hosting, but now as I apply the skills that I have learnt from my singing lessons, I no longer face the problem of losing my voice!

In my lessons with Sherlyn, she helped me to find out what my core weaknesses are and how I can improve. Sherlyn said something once during a lesson we had that really impacted me: “Build your ground first!”

Through the exercises and vocal drills that Sherlyn has taught me, I have learnt how to use and project my voice when I host. I can really feel the change and improvement in that aspect.

To other full-time working adults that love singing but haven’t begun pursuing or doing anything about your interest, or who can identify with my story, one of my favourite quotes provides apt advice: Waiting won’t make things happen, but doing will!

We shouldn’t procrastinate when it comes to pursuing our interests too because that won’t bring us anywhere. We might be really busy in our daily lives with work and commitments, but in putting in the extra effort to invest in your interest, it would yield a return more precious and valuable than you can imagine.
